A lot of people think the only way to write out an original story is by creating an original character. This isn't necessarily true. In case you decide to take on a canon character, here is an example of what you can do in terms of writing fanfiction or taking part in a roleplay. In this example, we'll use Oola, a character from Return of the Jedi. When a lot of people see Oola, they don't think much past her appearance. Sure, she was that green Twi'lek dancer who was gobbled up by a rancor. She was gone as soon as we saw her. Not so fast. There's a lot more to Oola than meets the eye. You could explore that in your stories. What motivated her to join Jabba's court? Did she have any choice in the matter? Why or why not? What was her life like before she arrived on Tatooine? Why did she decide to defy Jabba, knowing it would lead to her demise? And, a really fun question - what would have happened if Oola had not been eaten by the rancor? Would she have escaped? What kind of life might she have lived? Would she have joined the Rebellion, or found her way back to Ryloth? Who knows? You can explore all of that, and this is just one example.
